True to his word, wherever I went, Jacob was there. He joined Ally and me for our regular Friday evening drinks at the pub. Ally, being a sweetheart, invited him. On Saturday mornings, I found him waiting for me at the beach near Ben's hut for my paddle boarding lessons. On Saturday afternoons, he went a step further and took my sailing lessons instead of Greg from the yacht club.

"Greg's busy today," he asked when I questioned him.

"Doing what?"

"Whatever I want him to do."

I narrowed my gaze. "This is getting ridiculous, Jacob."

He grinned, his teeth dazzlingly white in the sunshine. "You haven't seen ridiculous yet."

Our jogging paths on weekday mornings didn't so much as cross, as align. He would wait for me outside my apartment, stretching to warm up, then take off alongside me.

"Nice morning, don't you think?" he asked one day.

"It's raining."

"Yes, but it's nice to be together."

"I'm with you every single day, Jacob."

"That makes every single day nice in my book."

I shook my head but couldn't help smiling. He was incorrigible, and to be honest, I enjoyed the company. Jogging alone was, well, lonely. Sometimes, he'd talk about island life, and point out plant species or stop to pick up a small lizard scurrying into the bushes. He was very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna, and I found it fascinating. Whether he deliberately avoided discussing work or not, I couldn't tell, but all work related discussions remained in the office.

If I went out to lunch or dinner with a member of his family, he came along too. No one except me seemed to think it strange to find him seated at our table. They must have invited him along, which suggested they knew his plan and were in on it. Traitors.

Yet they denied it when I asked, even Ally. "I just decided to invite him," she said when I cornered her in the ladies' bathroom at the pub. "It's good to see him going out. Good to see him wanting to go out. He's been a bit reclusive lately."

How could I argue with that? It would only make me look like a bitch for not wanting him there. Not that I didn't want him there. Not really. Well, sort of.

Aaagghhhh!

After three weeks, I confronted him one morning before our jog. "How long are you going to keep this up?"

"Until you accuse me of stalking you."

I laughed. "I'm not sure Sergeant Nick will believe me since he's a friend of yours."

He shortened his stride to match mine. "He'll believe you. I already told him to expect your complaint so there's no need to give me an official warning."

"Jacob! Is that even legal?"

"Are you going to complain?"

"No. I want to see how long you can do this before giving up."

"Who said I would give up? I'm incredibly stubborn. Ask anyone."

"I'm equally stubborn," I said. And since I didn't mind his company in the least, it was no hardship for me.

"Ah, yes, but I have a secret weapon up my sleeve.
